Town Deals Programme

Announced in 2019, the £3.6 billion Towns Fund was created with the aim of stimulating growth in areas of need across England. 541 eligible towns were identified, and these were scored on the basis of deprivation and risk across a range of criteria. These scores were used to create a shortlist of towns that were invited to apply for Town Deals funding worth up to £25 million.

The Doncaster and Stainforth Town Deal Boards, assemblages of local business persons, community figureheads and the Local Authority, were established to lead the development of Town Investment Plans for submission to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). These ambitious transformation proposals, focussed on improvements to infrastructure, economic growth and sustainability prospects, were used by DLUHC in their allocation of the £2.4 billion awarded across 101 of the proposed Town Deals.

The Doncaster and Stainforth Town Deal Boards are working closely with the National Government to ensure that funding is secured and mobilised efficiently for projects that will improve lives and prospects in each town. See below how Town Deals funding is being mobilised to improve your town.

Doncaster

Since its founding in the first century CE, Doncaster has been a cornerstone of British history. Fortified by the Romans for its position on the River Don, the town’s geography inspired the rail and coal industries which were key to its importance in industrialised England. The Doncaster Town Deal hopes to revitalise the town by coupling its important geographical standing with new investment and renewed vibrancy.

The £24.6 million pounds secured will be used to extend the railway forecourt, create modern, sustainable buildings and business opportunities in the Doncaster Gateway, improve public spaces, and ensure the protection and adaptation of Doncaster’s heritage sites as we enter this new chapter in the story of the city.

The progress of the Town Deal works and the deployment of funding will be overseen by the Doncaster Town Deal Board, a collection of local leaders from across business and cultural sectors.

Stainforth

Stainforth’s heritage and spirit are central to planning its future; the Stainforth Town Deal will aim to integrate Stainforth’s future developments into its storied past. With the help of our local partners, we hope to improve the station and town centre, create and reinforce physical and digital connections and begin work to restore the Colliery Headstocks around which Stainforth was built and thrived.
